Special Focus: Recent Releases about African-American Culture

Although African-American History Month is in February, The Magic Tree believes in celebrating all year round. And this year there are some outstanding releases that bear special mention. Here are a few of them:

Illustrated by Kadir Nelson
This is one of the best picture books of the year. Glorious illustrations complement the author's poem , entitled Mood Indigo, about her memories of growing up in the Harlem renaissance and meeting people like W.E.B. Dubois, Duke Ellington and Paul Robeson in her family¹s house. Ages 6-10, but adults will love it, too.

The song that gives this book its title was a classic recording from vocalist Billie Holiday. Now renowned children's illustrator Jerry Pinkney has created a series of paintings featuring a family of African-Americans who are moving from the rural South to the urban North during the Great Migration of the 1930s -- to accompany the text of the song. Ages 4-8.

A Pride of African Tales ($16.99; Amistad Press)
by Donna L. Washington
This book is a sparkling collection of folk tales from all over the African continent. Bright, colorful illustrations by James Ransome combine perfectly with the text to make African Tales a real treasure. Ages 9 - 12.

The Magic Tree Bookstore is very fortunate to be able to host visits from authors and illustrators. We always try to have unsold books signed so people who missed the event can still benefit with autographed children's books.

Some of the books are autographed with signed bookplates, some are autographed and also carry a little message from the author or illustrator. The autographed books are signed by the person listed. Some books are signed by the author, some by the illustrator only and some by both.

The prices quoted are the retail prices. We do not add on any extra charges for autographed books.
